The Twisleton family, Settle’s cultural heritage and the farming community invite partners as we form up a programme for the centenary celebration of Tom Twisleton (1845-1917). Tom’s life, work and writings are a window into some of the best features and aspirations of the Yorkshire Dales and we want our 2017 celebration to build partnership in celebrating and promoting:

This room has a familiar feel though I’m more used to drinking round the corner than in this so-called function room.  It’s not got such great memories - my father’s and brother’s wakes were here - but today’s events are laying down some good memories with the connecting up of the Twisleton family under the auspices of Lang Tom from Winskill. Here’s the famous picture of his dad Frank so-called Craven Giant my father gave me which first got me going on Twisleton genealogy helped by local priests giving me access to their registers. Where’s my godson - Tom Twisleton - you’re a real reminder of Lang Tom and his dad the Craven Giant! Just for information, my mother, whom you’re going to hear from shortly, lived last in Settle behind this pub, or more precisely the Naked Man, at 5 Whitefriars. Canon John Twisleton’s talk at Tom Twisleton 100  launch party Thursday 16 th February 2017 in Settle I’m delighted to be really back in Settle on such a day as this. I’m ‘Back in Settle’ on Facebook - but here for Uncle Tom’s Centenary launch – that’s a life event! I’m proud to have helped bring today about with Anne Reade, and to be helping bring the next nine months about - with all of you . Uncle Tom – my grand dad’s cousin – was known as such by my father, Greg, born 1900, who first walked me up to Winskill and introduced me to Tom’s poems. Dad thought I inherited the same gene as ‘Lang Tom’ – the name Tom uses of himself. I got nick-named ‘Fourth Peak’ at Giggleswick School! Dad showed me the precious family relic from an early 19 th century newspaper of Tom’s towering dad Frank nicknamed ‘The Craven Giant’ 7 foot 6 inches!
